About the Recipe

They say Easter is about resurrection. We say it’s about remembering who we are — every time we knead, bake, and break bread together.

This VAGMAG-style Easter Morning Bread was made for quiet mornings in foreign cities, with coffee steaming and sun sneaking through shutters.

We also like recipes made with milk and cream. What matters is what ingredients you have on hand. You can make your Easter buns with whatever you have in the kitchen. Use what you have. Start simple. We want this recipe to remind you that you don't need to make big changes to get the new beginnings you want.

Whether you’re in Istanbul or on a train to Valencia, let this bread remind you: you’re coming back to life.

Ingredients

  • 3 eggs (reserve one yolk for brushing)

  • ¾ cup plain yogurt

  • ¼ cup lukewarm water

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 100g unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 packet dry yeast

  • Zest of 1 orange

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • 4½ to 5 cups flour

  • Optional: sesame seeds, sliced almonds, sugar or love

Preparation

  1. In a bowl, mix yogurt and water. Add yeast and let it activate (5-10 minutes).

  2. Stir in eggs (save one yolk for later), sugar, melted butter, orange zest, and vanilla.

  3. Gradually add flour and knead until smooth and elastic.

  4. Cover and let rise in a warm spot for 2-3 hours.

  5. Shape into a braid (or anything free-spirited) and let rest for 30 more minutes.

  6. Brush with egg yolk, sprinkle with seeds or nuts.

  7. Bake at 180°C (356°F) for 25-30 minutes until golden.
