Hello, it's me Nellie. I am here with a new research. I went after a striking truth and was surprised by the size of the cosmetics industry as well as the amount of garbage it produces. This time I wrote an article with my solution proposal.
There are now countless beauty products and brands on the market, and the beauty industry is projected to continue growing. Almost every celebrity has their own cosmetics brand. But now, it's not the product ingredients or production conditions that matter, it's the name on the label. We dream of having a large makeup room and love watching influencers showcase their makeup collections. But in the midst of this consumption frenzy, what are we forgetting?
Let's Be Real: Is It Possible to Consume All Your Products?
The truth is, even if you only use one serum or mascara until it’s gone, it’s nearly impossible to consume it within the recommended time frame. Additionally, makeup products have a shelf life, and using them up before they expire is often unfeasible.
According to studies, an average woman buys around 300 lipsticks in her lifetime but rarely finishes most of them. In the US alone, over 120 million cosmetic products are discarded every year! This can easily be proven with a simple experiment using your own products.
This issue has been on our minds for a while. Large budgets are being allocated to makeup and skincare products, but should our investment in feeling good result in more waste?
Globally, 20 million tons of cosmetic packaging waste is produced annually, making the concept of sustainable beauty more important than ever.
